The Platform against the Orinoco Mining Arc and the Center for Studies of the Reality of Latin America have online shared the documentary “Not In Our Name: Resisting the Orinoco Mining Arc”, which you can now fully appreciate from any place on the planet and share to spread the struggle of various environmental organizations, indigenous peoples, social movements and other activists who have joined the voices against the mega project of the Orinoco Mining Arc in Venezuela.

Recall that the National Strategic Development Zone Orinoco Mining Arc was surprisingly decreed by the Venezuelan Government on February 24, 2016, with the aim of extracting, with the participation of 150 companies from 35 countries, minerals such as gold, copper , iron, diamond, coltan and rare-earth elements from southern Venezuela, one of the most diverse regions on the planet.

The Orinoco Mining Arc stands out as a large-scale project in which diverse agendas of individuals and organizations of the Venezuelan government and State are articulated, as well as national and international private companies, and actors from the military field, which has a profound impact on both the ecosystem of southern Venezuela, threatening countless species, as well as in the communities and indigenous peoples of this region of the country.

This is a project that has deepened the logic of extractivism in Venezuela and the region, compromising the life of indigenous communities, the most important freshwater reserves in the country and the biodiversity of the region.

Therefore, and despite the difficulties involved in the current socio-political moment in Venezuela, activists and various organizations have joined to raise their voices against this mining project in Venezuela and to demand a national debate on the culture of extractivism and the collective construction of an alternative economic and productive model that protects the biodiversity of the country and the region.

We share with great enthusiasm this documentary produced by the Platform against the Orinoco Mining Arc and the Center for Studies of the Reality of Latin America to make visible the impact of the Orinoco Mining Arc project on life itself in Venezuela.
