Amid the extreme circumstances the country is currently undergoing, the majority of Venezuelan’s have voiced their opinion in favor of a peaceful resolution to the crisis, showing their disposition to vote if suitable conditions are met, with both guarantees of fair competitiveness and a respect for the popular vote expressed in the polls. In summary: the right to Choose.

We reject the recent decisions taken by the Supreme Court of Justice in regards to the appointment of a new ad hoc board of directors to the National Electoral Council. This due to the fact that it constitutes a new obstacle in the ongoing progress made by the National Assembly, through the Committee of Electoral Applications.

Likewise, we deem the charges against the intervention of parties such as “Acción Democrática, Primero Justicia, Un Nuevo Tiempo, and Voluntad Popular,” unacceptable, seeing as these measures generate distrust and demotivation amongst the general public. This generates an obstacle when creating a new transparent and concerted electoral pathway, which is needed in order to find a solution to the urgent problems the country faces.

We insist that the solution for the current crisis requires a mutual understanding and recognition of roles, aspirations, and positions between the main political actors and social sectors. The Social Dialogue proposed by various voices in the Venezuelan civil society, points towards the establishment of trust between the different political actors in order to facilitate a n efficient communication process that will hence allow the restitution of democracy and reinstitutionalization of the country as a whole.

It is our obligation to remind the international community that Venezuelans are facing a severe humanitarian crisis that can only be resolved with external financial aid, which, due to lack of a strong government or adequate channel, hasn’t been available.

We believe it is necessary to identify key areas of common interest, which can then be used to come up with a mutually agreed solution that will reduce political costs for the actors involved. This will in itself allow for political progress towards a solution to the crisis, through the means of free, democratic elections, that are currently imperative and crucial.

We consider the renewal of a formal negotiation process between actors just as imperative, such as the efforts previously organized by the Norwegian government, in order to guarantee the follow through and compliance of any agreements.

We continue to be committed to the transparent and institutional reconstruction of the electoral route, a fundamental step towards a total democratic reconstruction in the country. Now, more than ever, compromise is necessary between all the political parties involved, both national and international, in order to defend basic civil and political rights, as well as ensure the validity of elections and the conditions needed for their efficient and free execution.
