Today, when the coronavirus pandemic puts the lives of millions of people worldwide at risk, actors of the protracted political conflict in Venezuela try to manage the outbreak separately, without paying attention to the clamor of millions of Venezuelans who face the challenge of Covid19 amid the Complex Humanitarian Emergency, with the profound deterioration of the health system and food security, and precarious access to water, electricity, gas, fuel, and employment. This stubborn behavior also leaves millions of compatriots in the diaspora without any possible or potential support from their country.

Current times require putting humanitarian emergencies before political interests. It is time for cooperation and coordination between political actors to face this enormous challenge that puts the lives of the population and the viability of the Venezuelan nation at risk. We are immersed in a deep social fragmentation under militarized forms of control, repression, and flagrant violations of human rights. Let us add to this the existence of weapons among the civilian population, the militarization and “siege” of some working-class neighborhoods, social unrest, anarchy, and social anomie. This context damages social cohesion, and provokes forms of confrontation and struggle for survival at the most primitive levels. It is time to strike a truce and put people’s lives first.

We call on political actors to agree on and build the commitments that make institutional advancement possible to add up the talents and strengths of our heterogeneous and plural society to overcome this very complicated situation. We need the support of experts, professionals, and leaders in different areas who can stop the pandemic before it causes more damage. It is urgent to establish a unified team, not of politicians or the military but of managers of experts in public health policies and epidemiology, doctors, psychologists, and other specialists capable of offering alternatives on how to deal with the confinement, of unifying the reports and information available to the public. A team supported by different sectors, with the credibility, efficiency, and effectiveness to impose guidelines to address the emergency on a day-to-day basis; with legitimacy to administer the reception and handling of international aid. This would contribute to strengthening the viability of proposals for financial relief to the country such as those recently proposed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Aquí Cabemos Todos (We All Fit Together) calls on individuals, groups, social organizations, unions, NGOs, and other social sectors to join this initiative. Our pressure will make a difference in this time of unprecedented challenges that demand citizen co-responsibility at a crucial moment for the future of Venezuela.
